Strength

No matter what your fitness and/or performance goals, strength training and consequent gains should be at, or at least near, the beginning of every program you decide to use to achieve those goals. Strength and strength endurance, along with proper nutrition, are what lead to increased lean muscle mass and work capacity. Increased lean mass and work capacity mean more intense workouts and a higher metabolism before, during and after each workout. A higher metabolism means more fat emulsification (loss) and, with luck, a leaner you. Want to lose fat? Train for strength.

Strength training is also at the core of all effective joint and back pain relief training programs. Ask any doctor that has anything to do with back pain relief and they will all tell you the same thing - you need to strengthen your “core”. Bone density issues? There’s nothing better than weight bearing exercises coupled with the proper intake of the bone building nutrients.

Whether you’re a man or a woman, an athlete or a grandma, strength is what allows you to do whatever it is you need and want to do every day. An athlete needs to be able to sprint/hit/throw on the field and a grandma needs to be able to safely pick up her grandchildren to give them a hug and kiss. “Mature athletes”, as we call them, are those individuals, usually over 40, that need to be able to climb stairs with a box in their hands and put that box on the top shelf when they get to the top without hurting themselves.

“Quality of life”, or an individual’s ability to enjoy normal life activities, is very important to mature athletes. Those of us that have yet to make it to 40/50/60 years of age often take it for granted. We don’t worry about falling and breaking things. We don’t worry about not being able to sit and stand pain free. Independence is something we have and are not afraid of losing. This is not always the case for mature athletes.

To sum things up, strength training has a place in every individual’s training regimen whether that person or persons’ goals include fat loss, strength and lean mass gains, balance and coordination or simply maintaining the ability to keep performing activities of daily living.
